World Music Idents

Cassie needed my help to drop some sodas that Taylor’s Tonics & The Fizzary are donating to a local hippy/world music radio station’s live event. So we drove up to El Cerrito and found the place. It was the nice house on a quiet suburban street with the raspberry-colored VW van parked outside, emblazoned with the station ident and frequency: 88.1 KECG.

The couple that were running things, Corey Mason and Debra Sue Kelvin, came out to collect the stuff and greet us. After insisting on hugs, they carried the boxes of soda over to the big piles of other donated goodies. Corey and I chatted about the kind of music the station plays. Anything from tribal dronings to hard Mexican techno, from jazz to dub to folk, apparently. You get the (magic eye) picture.

Anyway, Corey was taken with my accent, and so he asked me to come to the little studio cubby hole, jammed with stacks of CDs, mixing desk, CD decks and duplicators, and a big mic on a spring arm. He gave me a flyer for the radio station, and after cueing up a recorder, got me to do a couple of station idents.

So, next time you’re listening to…

worldone radio, 88.1 keCg 99.7, for peoplov peaceEco pOwerUnity*, a broadcast service of West Contra Costa Unified School District,

(*sic) …listen out for an ident by a British suburban Gen-X misanthrope. Those folks were so sweet and friendly, they could almost melt this judgmental little heart of mine. Apart from that, I like a bit of Goa Trance, Tribal Techno and White-boy Dub, so who knows.

In other audio news, I finally caved and created a Facebook page for my podcast, The Coiled Spring. Go and like it.  I’m in the process of editing the next episode, so maybe I’ll insert these idents just for fun.
